How to Prevent Sump Pump Failure

If you have an older sump pump system or are located in an area that is prone to flooding, having a backup battery and alarm system is a smart idea.

Your sump pump is the first line of defense against flooding on your property. Power outages and heavy rainfall can lead to sump pump failure. Installing a backup battery and alarm system can give you peace of mind that your home, business, or commercial property will remain safe and protected from water damage.

What Is a Sump Pump?

Sump pumps are a building or home’s flood defense system. When they detect rising water levels, they power on and pump the excess water outside and away from the building through a drainage pipe. Most sump pumps are reliable and rarely malfunction. However, it is still a good idea to keep them regularly maintained to prevent any issues.

If your sump pump fails, water will back up into the basement, which can cause structural damage, rotting, and mold growth. Not to mention damaging any furniture or equipment in the flooded area. If you know that flooding is a problem in your area, regularly inspecting your sump pump for any issues can help prevent it from failing when you need it most.

How to Prevent Sump Pump Failure

Having a backup battery and an alarm system will help lower the chances of your sump pump failing. But even with these upgrades, it is still wise to perform regular check-ups to keep your pump in working order. These simple steps will help keep you from sump pump failure and let you know if it needs servicing.

  • Clear out debris. Over time, debris like rock, gravel, and mud can accumulate around the pump and lead to a clogged screen or pipes. Clear out any debris or small objects near the pump, and check the inlet grate and pipes for any clogs or buildup.

  • Check the power. Make sure your pump is plugged into the proper type of outlet. GFCI outlets are best as they will reduce the risk of injury to shock when there is water in the area. You should also inspect the power cord to ensure it is clear of any damage.

  • Test the float switch and the check valve. To test that these parts of the pump are working properly, dump a bucket or two of water into the pit. If the pump turns on and empties the water without it flooding back in after it shuts off, then it’s good. If the pump doesn’t activate or if any water floods back into the pit after the pump shuts off, then it needs servicing.

Battery Backups and Alarms

As stated above, having a backup battery and an alarm system can significantly reduce the chances of your home, business, or commercial property flooding. Battery backups are extremely helpful in cases of power failure. If you experience heavy storms in your area or if your building is simply prone to outages, a backup battery can bring you peace of mind.

Alarm systems are also a great upgrade to install if your sump pump doesn’t already have one. The alarm will alert you if there is something wrong with your pump or if any water is starting to back up. Some systems will even notify your alarm company if you have a security system installed. They can also send alerts to your cell phone.

What to Do in Case of Flooding

If your sump pump does fail and you experience flooding, you should call an experienced flood restoration company to handle the job. Even if there is only the smallest amount of water or damage, having a professional inspect the area is a good idea. Any residual moisture left over that does not dry out properly can lead to mold and mildew growth.

A certified restoration specialist will know how to thoroughly inspect your home or property to ensure it is efficiently repaired of any moisture.
