Virus Protection How to Disinfect Your Facility

If you are a business owner or a landlord, it’s important to be more diligent than ever with your property’s sanitary conditions by cleaning and disinfecting your commercial building. This will help reduce the spread of the viruses like coronavirus, and keep your staff and tenants safe.

Even if your renters are all self-quarantining and staying indoors, or if your business is temporarily shut down or staffed by a skeleton crew, regularly sanitizing your property is vital during these trying times. For step-by-step instructions to print out and give to your crew, click here.

How to Clean and Disinfect

To clean your commercial building, make sure you use water and soap. Scrub down every surface, but especially high-touch surfaces like:

  • doorknobs
  • tables
  • light switches
  • countertops
  • handles
  • desks
  • toilets
  • faucets
  • sinks
  • keyboards

After you clean each area, it’s time to disinfect. Use an EPA-registered disinfectant for best results. Follow the instructions listed on the disinfectant. Remember to always wear safety gear like gloves and eye protection when disinfecting surfaces.

If you don’t have access to one of the EPA-registered disinfectants, any alcohol solution with at least 70% alcohol is a good substitute. As is a diluted bleach solution (using ⅓ cup of bleach per gallon of water).

Safety Precautions When Cleaning

Wear Disposable Gloves.

When you handle items that could potentially be covered in coronavirus, it’s important that you wear all the protective gear necessary. This includes disposable gloves, gowns, eye goggles, and face shields. This applies to all cleaning and disinfecting duties, especially when you’re handling the trash.

Wash Your Hands a Lot.

As soon as you remove your gloves after disinfecting, wash your hands. Not sure when the last time you washed your hands? When in doubt, wash your hands. Scrub using soap and water for 20 seconds. Get in between each finger and around your wrists. Don’t forget your thumbs! Not sure how long 20 seconds is? Sing “Happy Birthday” twice, and that should do the trick!

Don’t have access to soap and water? Hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol can be used. With the hand sanitizer, also rub it in your hands for 20 seconds to get maximum benefit.

What to Clean and Disinfect

Soft Surfaces

Clean drapes, carpets, and rugs. Clean all soft surfaces with soap and water. Launder items in hot water and laundry detergent, if you can. If you want to take extra precautionary steps, use the EPA-registered disinfectants.

Electronics

Before cleaning electronics like computers, keyboards, televisions, or remote controls, make sure to check the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning and disinfecting. Use alcohol-based wipes or sanitizing sprays with at least 70% alcohol. Make sure to dry surfaces thoroughly before plugging in or turning on. Consider covering all electronics in a wipeable cover for easier cleaning in the future.

Fabric and laundry

Per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, (CDC), wear disposable gloves when washing clothes, fabrics, and other items from infected people. When you’re placing items into the washing machine, do not shake out the items. You can wash infected people’s items with the items from non-infected people. Wash items on the hottest setting allowed by the fabric to ensure the coronavirus is killed. Clean and disinfect any hampers or receptacles the clothes and items were in. When you’re done, remove the gloves and wash your hands right away.

Reviews from Our Clients

"Luckily I have never needed to use a restoration company, but as someone who has worked closely with Alpha Omega, they have treated my clients very well, and have always been honest and very transparent. Although their whole team is very professional and punctual, Carissa and Sonya have been great to work with."

"Best service in town! I had water leaking through my basement ceiling from the overflow drain in my upstairs bathtub. They showed up immediately after I called, they were super professional and helped me find the leak and even told me how I can fix it myself. I was so impressed how well the turned my problem around."
